Exams
At Hampstead Music School, we support students through every stage of their exam preparation, from early grades through to advanced levels.
We mainly prepare students for ABRSM and Trinity exams, including practical exams, performance grades, digital exams and music theory. Our teachers can advise on the most suitable exam route for each student, depending on their age, level, goals and learning style.
Exam Preparation
ABRSM offers a clear and structured pathway for musical development, with graded assessments that help students build confidence, discipline and a strong foundation in musicianship.
Our teachers can help students prepare for:
Practical Grades
Performance Grades
Digital Exams
Music Theory Exams
Sight-reading
Scales and technical work
Aural tests
Repertoire selection
Exam technique and confidence-building
Whether a student is taking their first exam or working towards a higher grade, we provide focused, supportive preparation tailored to their individual needs.
Face-to-Face and Digital Exams
We prepare students for both face-to-face exams and digital submissions.
For face-to-face exams, teachers guide students through the full exam format, including scales, pieces, sight-reading and aural tests where required.
For digital exams, we help students prepare polished performances suitable for recording, with attention to presentation, musical accuracy and confidence.
Music Theory
We also offer music theory lessons for students preparing for ABRSM theory exams or those who would like to strengthen their general musical understanding.
Theory lessons can cover:
Reading notation
Rhythm and metre
Key signatures and scales
Intervals
Chords and harmony
Musical terms and signs
Past paper preparation
Exam technique
Music theory is especially useful for students progressing through the graded exam system and for those looking to deepen their overall musicianship.
Accompanists
For instrumentalists and singers who require an accompanist, Hampstead Music School can help arrange one.
We can provide experienced accompanists for:
Exam preparation
Rehearsals
Recordings
Face-to-face exams
Performances
This allows students to feel fully prepared and supported before their exam day or digital recording.
Choosing the Right Exam Path
Not every student needs to take exams, and we believe exams should support musical progress rather than create unnecessary pressure.
For many children, graded exams can provide useful goals and a clear sense of achievement. For adult students, exams may be helpful too, but lessons can also be shaped around enjoyment, technique, repertoire and personal musical goals.
Our teachers will always advise honestly on whether an exam is appropriate and when a student is ready.
